Miami Beach Dedicates Park to the Late Maurice Gibb
-- Beloved Beach Resident Loved the Park --
WHEN: Sunday, March 4, 2007
4:00 p.m.
WHERE: Maurice Gibb Park, 18 Street and Purdy Avenue, Miami Beach
WHO: City of Miami Beach and the Family of the Late Maurice Gibb
WHAT: Dedication of Maurice Gibb Park
Just around the corner from Middle Ear Studios, where the Bee Gees recorded and mixed some of their
most famous albums, a quiet little park along Biscayne Bay made the perfect spot for meditation,
contemplation and inspiration. Maurice Gibb frequented the park, even when he and his brothers were not
recording. That is why, after his untimely death in 2003, his family and the City of Miami Beach worked
together to honor his memory at that very site.
On Sunday, March 4, 2007, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer, members of the City Commission and City
administration will join the Gibb family to officially dedicate the park as Maurice Gibb Park (formerly known
as Island View Park). The event, an intimate celebration of his life, will begin at 4:00 p.m. Maurice Gibb
Park is located at Purdy Avenue and 18 Street.
In October of 2004, the Miami Beach City Commission approved the re-naming of Island View Park to
Maurice Gibb Park, and in November of that year, the people of Miami Beach approved it on the ballot. The
City then proceeded with a $75,000 renovation of the park, creating a new substantial sign at the corner and
also commissioned a special mosaic of imported glass tiles in tribute to “Mo’s” life.
The event is open to the public, but parking on Purdy Avenue will be reserved for invited guests until after
the ceremony. Parking is available at 17 Street and West Avenue, and in the two lots on West Avenue at 17
and 16 streets. Police will be on site to assist with safe crossing to the park.
The Gibb family has asked that flowers and other gifts not be brought to the park, but rather that fans and
friends who wish to make a gesture of remembrance to please donate to the Gibb Family Foundation C/O
